Background
We are seeking to appoint a post-doc researcher to work with Prof. Giorgia Giovannetti (Principal Investigator, PI) and her team in the project “Stable food Access and Prices and Lower Exposure to Shocks” (STAPLES), funded by the PRIMA Programme, Call Section 1 2023 FOOD VALUE CHAIN.

STAPLES is an international project coordinated by Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with a Mediterranean Research Consortium formed by: CCA-OEET (Italy), University of Gastronomic Sciences (Italy), Economic Research Forum (Egypt), Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association (Spain), Ibnou Zohr University of Agadir (Morocco), Agricultural Cooperative for Land Reclamation Al Madina (Egypt), Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Spain), Soc. Coop. Agroalimentare e Agroindustriale del BRADANO SPA (Italy).

The Turin Center on Emerging Economies (OEET) is part of the Collegio Carlo Alberto (CCA) and is an independent, non-profit centre dedicated to the study and monitoring of emerging economies and to the dissemination of results of economic analyses and information to firms, institutions and the general public. The CCA is a foundation created in 2004 as a joint initiative of the Compagnia di San Paolo and the University of Torino with the mission of fostering research and high education in the social sciences, in accordance with the values and practices of the international academic community. It is located in Turin, one of the most vibrant Italian cities.

The appointed post-doc researcher will join a large international research team from the Mediterranean area and will have the chance to work on a research project that will break new ground in the field of global value chain analysis. In particular, the team coordinated by Prof. Giorgia Giovannetti will lead the Work Package aimed at understanding the interdependencies of countries within a global network of food trade relations and detecting potential sources of shocks with a focus on Egypt and Morocco. More specifically, the appointed post-doc researcher will assist the PI and her team in the following tasks:

  1. developing a static network analysis of MENA region in cereals’ global value chains;
  2. identifying potential stressors and shocks by means of dynamic network analysis;
  3. assessing resilience to shocks at different levels.

Job description
More specifically, the work will involve:

  1. Collaborating with the PI in conducting high quality research and contributing to the key project’s deliverables and high quality publications.
  2. Collaborating with the PI in all the coordination activities of the Research Consortium for the WP led by CCA (e.g. preparation of the research team meetings; organization of shared folders and data repository; administration of email communications, overseeing the timeline etc.).
  3. Participating and contributing to the meetings of the research team;
  4. Collaborating in the writing of deliverables;
  5. Contributing to STAPLES dissemination initiatives, including participation to high level international conferences and organization of dissemination events.

The post-doc researcher will also be encouraged and expected to develop his/her analyses on the basis of the research carried out and provide inputs throughout the development of the project.

Contract details
The contract is full-time starting as of 1st May 2024 and with a duration of 36 months. The place of work is CCA, Turin (Italy).

Type of contract: full-time temporary position for 1 year (renewable for other 2 years) with salary in line with University and CCA post-doc standards.

Qualifications and competence
Essential:

  • PhD in Economics, preferably with a thesis on GVC analysis
  • A postgraduate (MA/MSc) degree in Economics or similar degrees with economic specialization. Degrees directly giving access to a PhD programme in their home university system will be regarded as equivalent to an MA/MSc/MRes for the purposes of this job application.
  • Proficiency in English (active and passive use of the language) at C1 level.
  • Solid methodological competence in quantitative methods and in the use of statistical software, preferably Stata.
  • Proven ability to write up research findings.
  • Ability to take initiative, self-manage and contribute intellectually to the overall project.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Research experience in topics relating to GVC analysis and/or publications on the topic.
  • Prior research experience in externally funded projects.
  • Basic knowledge of Italian language.
