The Collegio Carlo Alberto offers new Fellow and Affiliate positions.

FELLOWS AND AFFILIATES

The Collegio Carlo Alberto (CCA) fosters research, education and dissemination in the social sciences that are consistent with the values and practices of the international academic community. Its main aim is excellence in research, teaching, and policy design at a level that is comparable to the world’s top social science departments and research centers.

Carlo Alberto Fellows and Affiliates are distinguished scholars in the social sciences who contribute to the pursuit of these aims and who are fluent in English, the working language of the CCA. They are active faculty members of the University of Torino (UniTo) who participate to the CCA's scientific life and help building the international reputation of the Collegio as a leading research center. For this purpose, Fellows/Affiliates are eligible to apply for a yearly research grant (for more details, visit this page, may obtain a work space when they are at the CCA, and have access to the CCA’s Research Incentives Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

The distinction between the title of Fellow and the title of Affiliate is solely based on scientific seniority criteria, as explained below. More details on qualifications are provided in this page.

Fellows

Carlo Alberto Fellows are senior distinguished scholars in the social sciences. In terms of scientific achievement, Fellows are scholars whose CV is comparable to those of Full Professors in top European Universities. They are appointed as long as they retain their position at UniTo (more details below).

Affiliates

Carlo Alberto Affiliates are junior scholars in the social sciences. In terms of scientific achievement, Affiliates are scholars whose CV is comparable to those of (tenurable) senior Assistant Professors or (tenured) Associate Professors in top European Universities. They are appointed for renewable four-year terms (more details below).

DUTIES AND BENEFITS

As spelled out above, Fellows and Affiliates (F&A for short) are UniTo faculty members who participate to the CCA's life and help building the international reputation of the CCA as a leading research and education center.

In order to do so, they perform the following duties, as long as they do not conflict with their duties to UniTo:

  1. F&A are required to indicate the CCA in addition to their UniTo Department as affiliation in their publications (where possible). They are expected to adhere to strict professional standards both in the conduct of their research and in the conduct of all the other duties of a University faculty member (e.g., in relating to students, colleagues or staff members).
  2. They are expected to perform several activities that help the CCA to fulfil its research, education and outreach missions. For instance, they are expected to make an effort to participate to and help organize the CCA’s scientific events related to their discipline, as well as all participate to and collaborate in the CCA’s outreach activities (regardless of their field). Also, they are expected to make an effort to help the CCA attract financial resources, either by submitting grants in which the CCA is a participating institution (in accordance with the principles and criteria stated in the CCA-UniTo framework agreement), or by participating in the development of some of the Collegio’s strategic initiatives (e.g., the DataLab), when such initiatives are within the scope of their research interests. Finally, they may be asked to be involved in some aspects of the administration of the CCA, as well as in some of the educational programs run by the CCA or in which it collaborates with UniTo..

The Collegio rewards a Fellow/Affiliate (F/A) as follows:

  • The F/A appears in the “Faculty” section of the CCA web page, and has a dedicated space for a personal web page (as well as an institutional email and access to the CCA’s electronic resources).
  • The F/A has access, via an online reservation system, to a work space at the CCA for when s/he comes to the building (such spaces are limited and therefore not guaranteed every day).
  • The F/A has access to the CCA’s Research Incentive Program (the details of which are found in this page), which incentivizes publications on internationally prestigious scientific outlets.
  • The F/A has access to the CCA’s Research Fund Program (the details of which are found in this page, which incentives other types of CCA service (as outlined above).

The F/A is entitled to apply for other initiatives of the CCA, such as the “Call for Workshops” which co-funds scientific workshops and meetings held at the CCA or in which the CCA is a participating institution.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND TITLE RETENTION

F/As retain their title as long as they are members of the UniTo faculty, and lose it as soon as such affiliation is discontinued (including retirement). Affiliates are appointed for four years. At the end of this period, they may be renewed, promoted to Fellow, or may be not renewed if the qualifications described above, and in more detail in this page, are no longer met. Fellows retain their title as long as they keep their UniTo affiliation.  However, the F/A title can be revoked at any time by decision of the CCA Board of Directors if the F/A does not fulfil the duties described in 1) above, 2) violates the Collegio’s Code of Ethics or the University of Torino Code of Ethics, or f he/she acts in a way that is prejudicial to the reputation of the CCA.

HOW TO APPLY

Carlo Alberto Fellow/Affiliates are appointed at regular intervals. The selection process begins with a call for applications, authorized by the CCA’s Board of Directors. When the call is open, candidates with the required qualifications submit their applications online by filling the application form below. Applications should include a CV and a statement, of no more than 1000 words, describing both the research projects that applicants intend to pursue during their term of office, and how they plan to benefit from, and contribute to, the activities and the profile of the Collegio. More details about the selection criteria are provided in this page.
