Workshop
Parenting Styles, Human Capital Investments and Children’s Outcomes
Organized by the Impact Evaluation Unit
The 2024 IEU workshop focuses on parenting styles and children outcomes. Recently economists have begun to extend their research scope beyond traditional models of human development to consider an expanded set of inputs, including the style of parenting itself. The concept of “parenting style” has been formalized in developmental psychology as a means of characterizing parents’ approach in raising their children. In some studies presented at the workshop the focus is on early childhood, while in other studies the focus is on adolescence. As Heckman and coauthors and Steinberg have shown, these are important phases in which children are more malleable and parental inputs can affect them more significantly and for longer time. The researches presented here utilize several different empirical strategies, structural and non structural as well as randomization trials.
