Recent events, from the financial crisis to the pandemic and to the new wave of populism, have reignited debates about governments’ and large corporations’ escalating roles in the economy. A series of empirical papers that rely on new micro-data and experimental methods shed light on some of the many ways firms are affected by and interact with governments and with society at large. How political distortions impact on the way firms operate and talent is allocated? What is the impact of corporations’ rising involvement in social and political issues?
