There is general agreement that much of the decrease in morbidity and mortality is the result of new pharmaceutical products. The U.S. pharmaceutical market, which accounts for 50-60 % of global pharmaceutical sales, is in the middle of regulatory changes that could lower these sales significantly. Given the costs and benefits of pharmaceuticals, what are the likely impacts of these changes on pharmaceutical profits and consumer welfare? How to mitigate such effects?

È opinione comune che gran parte della diminuzione della morbilità e della mortalità sia dovuta ai nuovi prodotti farmaceutici. Il mercato farmaceutico statunitense, che rappresenta il 50-60% delle vendite globali di farmaci, è nel bel mezzo di cambiamenti normativi che potrebbero ridurre significativamente queste vendite.
