A World of Giving and Volunteering
Theo Schuyt
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
Organized by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione Collegio Carlo Alberto
In Italy and all EU-countries the pandemic evokes strong governmental involvement to cope with medical, economic and social problems. At the same time however the social involvement of citizens, foundations and corporations to meet the needs of people and communities are heavily neglected. In 1995 Prof. Theo Schuyt launched the study “Giving in the Netherlands” to make these private contributions to the public good visible at a bi-annual basis. In his lecture he will presents data of private giving and volunteering in the Netherlands and Europe. He also reflects on what philanthropy stands for: private contributions to the public good. As such philanthropy and governments have to deal with “how to cohabitate”. As former chair of the EC-DG R&I Expert Group “Foundations, Venture Philanthropy and Social Investments” he will elaborate on this question.
