The EU’s Efforts to Remedy Democratic Backsliding Among its Member States: Effective, counterproductive or of no importance?
Joint with Carlo Alberto Law Seminars
Abstract: A question that has been surprisingly absent in the scholarly literature on the EU’s rule of law crisis is whether it actually matters for democracy and rule of law in backsliding countries what actions the EU takes. While many scholars have been adamant that the EU should do more, there has been little theorizing and few empirical analyses of if and how EU actions may promote change. The talk presents and discusses recent research addressing this gap in the literature.
