Motivation
With articles published in top economics journals (American Economic Review, Econometrica, and Review of Economic Studies) and in top field journals, Marco Battaglini is one of the leading researchers in the area of political economy and applied economic theory. His work brings sophisticated economic theory to important applied questions. In one example of his recent work, Battaglini examines how political economy considerations affect fiscal policy over the business cycle. In another, he examines the effect of balanced budget amendments on economic performance. Among his contributions, one of the most highly cited is his job market paper, "Multiple Referrals and Multidimensional Cheap Talk" published in Econometrica in 2002. His work provides novel applied insights and innovative theoretical contributions. This combination is rare and a testament to Battaglini’s outstanding talent.

The Carlo Alberto Lecture
On June 10, 2009, Marco Battaglini will deliver the Carlo Alberto Lecture at the Collegio. On June 9 and 11, respectively, James J. Heckman (Department of Economics, University of Chicago) and Eric Maskin (School of Social Science, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) will deliver the Vilfredo Pareto Lectures in Economics and Social Sciences through which the Collegio aims to honor Pareto (1848-1923), alumnus of the University and the Politecnico of Torino and a towering figure in the social sciences.
